I love using our grill to make tofu! It is so easy and delicious (plus, a great source of protein). Tofu you are really building the flavor from a blank canvas and you can go any direction with that flavor. When I do tofu on the grill I go for seasonings that you might use for chicken. But, it really is an opportunity to get creative in the kitchen!
A few base tips with seasoning tofu:
I pretty much always use a little Soy Sauce (or GF alternative) as a base.
Trader Joe's seasoning 'Vegan Chicken-less' and Umami are always added - you could also use Turmeric since that is the main ingredient for the Chicken-less!
You need an acid of some kind too- vinegar, lemon/lime juice.
Ingredients
1 package of Organic Extra-firm tofu
Soy Sauce/ Tamari
Red wine vinegar
Vegan Chicken-less seasoning
Umami
Garlic/onion/salt/pepper
Herbs de Provence
Directions
Preheat the grill to Max- it is about 500° F.
The first thing with tofu is having to drain and press it. Cut open the package and pour all the liquid out. To press it, I like to wrap it in a paper towel and then a dish towel (so no fuzzy's get on it). You want to put the wrapped tofu between two hard surfaces, I use cutting boards. Then, put something heavy on top to apply pressure for at least 10 minutes. Unwrap and cut into half inch think slices.
Now time to season it up! Start with the base of soy sauce and coat the tofu. Add the vinegar. Then, add all your dry seasonings. Toss the tofu to evenly coat all sides. You can always add more soy sauce/vinegar if needed! It is helpful to let it sit in the seasoning for some time but it totally okay if you are tight for time!
Add the tofu for the grill for 10 minutes and flip it half way through.
Serve with veggies and enjoy!
